April 26 :
Vice President Kamala Harris met with reality TV personality Kim Kardashian at the White House on Thursday to talk about criminal justice reform following the clemency that the Biden administration extended to those convicted of nonviolent drug offences.

Twelve individuals were given clemency by President Joe Biden on Wednesday; eleven were pardoned and five had their sentences commuted. At Thursday's gathering, four of the beneficiaries were present.

Despite widespread dissatisfaction with Biden and her administration's handling of the economy, constant inflation, and the Gaza conflict, Harris is concentrating on winning over young voters and people of colour in her quest for reelection.

No nation has a higher incarceration rate than the US. Among the 1.9 million individuals in prison, a quarter are serving time for drug-related charges. People of colour have a disproportionate number of jailed friends and family members, and among young voters, drug law reform has the most backing. Republicans typically have more support among young people, Black people, and Latinos.

There are others whose mistakes might be considered criminal, according to Harris's remarks at the White House. "But is it not the sign of a civil society that we allow people a way to earn their way back and give them the support and the resources they need to do that?"

Former prosecutor Harris was expected by White House officials to make an announcement regarding the finalisation of a rule by the Small Business Administration that will eliminate the majority of restrictions on loan eligibility related to a person's criminal past.

The entrepreneur and reality TV star Kim Kardashian initially rose to prominence as a campaigner for changes to the criminal justice system while serving under President Trump. She was commended by Harris for her efforts. "Every time I've gone and visited a prison, I've met some of the smartest individuals with the brightest ideas, and to see the changes that are happening to make their re-entry easier, I think is going to be life changing," according to Kardashian.
