India’s first light tram system in Kochi; expected to be a solution to traffic congestion.

India’s first light tram system is set to begin in Kochi. Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has submitted a proposal to build a 6.2 km-long tram network. In the first phase, the route being considered is the 6.2 km stretch from MG Road to Thevara via the High Court and Shanmugham Road. The heavy passenger traffic and strategic importance of this route are the main reasons for its selection.

Unlike traditional metro systems, light trams can operate along existing roads, and if necessary, on elevated tracks or underground corridors. Each tram will be 25 meters long with three coaches, capable of carrying 240 passengers at a time. Powered by electric-hybrid technology, these trams can be fully charged in just six minutes and can travel up to 45 kilometers on a single charge.

If this project becomes a reality, it will serve as an alternative to overcrowded buses. It is also expected to help ease traffic congestion in the city. The project could set a model for other Indian cities as well. Swiss company HESS Green Mobility had conducted a preliminary study on the project, and its report has provided a clear picture of the technical and financial feasibility.
