May 2 :
A statement from the office of US Representative Eric Swalwell stated that on May 2, Swalwell accused India of beginning "a campaign of transnational repression against the Sikh community in the United States and Canada." The existence of "credible evidence" to support this was also asserted by him. "Notable members of America's Sikh community were alerted by the FBI to a murder-for-hire plot that was part of the campaign," he continued. United States Sikhs are being persecuted because of their faith and identity, according to Congressman Swalwell.

America, the country of opportunity and freedom, is a sanctuary for those fleeing political oppression and bloodshed. Additionally, he stated that the Indian government's conduct constituted a "serious breach of American law" and threatened to "challenge the longstanding relationship between the world's oldest and the world's largest democracy."

"Democratic nations must oppose authoritarian repression of this kind, not abuse one another," he went on to say. As an advocate for Sikh issues in the United States Congress, Swalwell is a part of the American Sikh Congressional Caucus. Among the biggest Sikh communities in the nation is one that Swalwell is honoured to represent, he added.

He made these comments following reports that the FBI had notified one of Swalwell's constituents about threats directed at him. He expressed his gratitude for this, the congressman stated.

The FBI and the Biden administration have my gratitude for making protecting our most vulnerable populations a top priority and for acting swiftly to address these concerns. I beseech them to keep their vigilance sharp in keeping an eye on this danger and to ensure that the police actively collaborate with Sikhs in the United States to safeguard their well-being and religious liberty.

In the past, when Canada initiated an investigation into the alleged ties between India and the assassination of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, Swalwell had taken a harder line against India. In the province of British Columbia, Nijjar was fatally murdered outside a Sikh temple last year. He was officially designated as a "terrorist" by New Delhi.
