Aruna Miller honored with induction into the Maryland Women's Hall of Fame for her outstanding achievements

March 26 :
Along with four other women, Aruna Miller, the Indian American Lieutenant Governor of Maryland and the state's first woman of colour and immigrant elected to a statewide position, was inducted into the Maryland Women's Hall of Fame.

Speaker of the US House Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the Maryland House Adrienne A. Jones, Secretary of State Susan Lee, and Comptroller Brooke Lierman were among the others honoured alongside Miller. According to a press release, Governor Wes Moore and First Lady Dawn Moore thanked each participant at the event held at Government House on March 21.

Miller remarked, "I am honoured to be among the extraordinary women whose lives have inspired us to see more, do more, and be more." "Every day, I strive to improve the lives of Marylanders and lay a solid foundation for a future in which our leaders of tomorrow can take pride."

Moore remarked, "It is an honour to work with the Lieutenant Governor; she has left an incalculable mark on this state as my partner in this work." "The women who are being inducted into the Hall of Fame tonight are our cornerstone, not just our source of inspiration. Without their dedication and influence, our administration, this state, and our nation would be incomplete.

First Lady Moore stated, "Lt. Governor Miller is a force within this administration and a leader for all young women throughout Maryland." "We'd like to congratulate all of the inductees, whose careers have made it possible for other women to pursue leadership roles."

The Women Legislators of Maryland and the Maryland Commission for Women collaborated to create the Maryland Women's Hall of Fame in 1985, which honours and remembers Maryland women whose contributions to the state's political, economic, cultural, and general health have been historic in nature. Miller, the 10th lieutenant governor of Maryland, is the state's second female lieutenant governor and the state's first elected woman of colour and immigrant to a statewide position.

Her policy portfolio as Lt. Governor includes mental health, transportation, and STEM equity. In order to make highway construction zones safer and safeguard the lives of employees, drivers, and law enforcement, she chairs the Governor's construction Zone Safety Work Group.

In an effort to heal divisions, promote religious tolerance, put an end to hatred, and better serve all communities, faith leaders from all around the state of Maryland come together under Miller's leadership to form Maryland's inaugural Council on Interfaith Outreach.

Miller was born in Andhra Pradesh, India, and moved to the US with her family when she was seven years old. She graduated from Missouri University of Science and Technology with a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering. Her father is a mechanical engineer.

Miller previously worked for Montgomery County's Department of Transportation as a civil and transportation engineer, where she created fair access to transportation across the county to reduce traffic and enhance public safety.

She directed programmes for 25 years that improved access to employment centres and schools and made community facilities safe for transit users, bicyclists, pedestrians, and those with different abilities. She served as District 15's representative in the Maryland House of Delegates from 2010 to 2018. She has lived in Montgomery County with her husband David for more than 30 years, during which time they raised three kids.
