Chicago IL:
In the lush expanse of Busse Woods Grove 18 in Elk Grove Village, the air thrummed with the rhythmic beats of dhol and the joyous echoes of "Ganpati Bappa Morya" as Desi Junction Summerfest 2025 unfolded like a grand tapestry of Indian heritage woven into the American landscape. On Saturday, August 9, 2025, from 10:30 AM to 8:30 PM, this free-for-all extravaganza transformed a simple picnic grove into a pulsating hub of culture, community, and unbridled fun. With over a thousand attendees – families, seniors, kids, and volunteers – converging under the sun-dappled trees, the event wasn't just a festival; it was a living bridge connecting generations, regions, and traditions from Mumbai to Kolkata, Delhi to Hyderabad, and even echoes from Europe and India itself.
Desi Junction, Chicagoland’s premier South Asian community organization, successfully hosted Summerfest 2025 on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at Busse Woods Grove 18, bringing together thousands of families for a full day of cultural celebration, entertainment, food, and community spirit.
The event ran from 9:00 AM to 7:30 PM and was completely free to attend, offering FREE entry, FREE parking, FREE breakfast (Langar Sewa), FREE shuttle service, and FREE ice cream for kids under 5.

Imagine starting your day with the aroma of fresh langar sewa, a complimentary breakfast, lovingly prepared by the Desi Junction team. As shuttles ferried guests to the venue with free parking ensuring hassle-free access, the stage was set for a day that blended nostalgia with innovation. Free entry, free ice cream for kids under five, and a shuttle service made inclusivity the cornerstone, ensuring no one was left out of the desi-style merriment. But what truly set this Summerfest apart was its creative fusion: traditional rituals reimagined with modern twists, like a bike parade roaring through the grounds, symbolizing the dynamic spirit of the diaspora.

The opening ceremony at 10:30 AM was a heartfelt spectacle, embodying Desi Junction's ethos of equality and volunteerism. "There's no leader here; all are volunteers," announced the emcee, as seniors, grandparents, and even a special dignitary – Chaudhary Singh Sahab, an ex-minister from Uttar Pradesh who traveled all the way from India – were invited to the stage. Balloons were popped one by one by elders from diverse backgrounds: Delhi, Mumbai, Andhra, and beyond. "This program is excellent; it unites people from all Indian states, showcasing India's diversity in America," remarked Chaudhary Singh Sahab amid thunderous applause. His words captured the essence – a celebration of national integration, where attendees from Maharashtra chanted "Ganpati Bappa Morya" in unison, and Andhra folks received big cheers for their representation.

Innovation shone through in the performances, kicking off with a classical group opening act by Gandharv Mahavidyalaya North America. Richa Kulkarni and her daughter Preeti Asmi Kulkarni graced the stage with Kathak, accompanied by live Hindustani classical music on harmonium, and tabla. Their Saraswati Vandana invoked the goddess of knowledge, blending graceful rhythms with vibrant finales in teen taal. "It's personally close to my heart; India is nothing but culture," shared emcee Mayanka, highlighting how such acts promote Indian classical arts through education and concerts

Patriotism pulsed next with kids from Payel's Vocal Studio delivering a stirring medley of songs like "Vatan Vatan Mere Aabad Rahe Tu" and "Dil Diya Hai Jaan Bhi Denge." Dressed in uniforms evoking national pride, these young stars from Matrix Club classes in Naperville brought tears and cheers, reminding everyone of the blend of heritage and joy. "Great job, Payel and team! These kids are our future," echoed the crowd's applause.
The Dance Dhamaka segment, introduced, turned the grove into a Bollywood battleground. Kids aged 6-12 dazzled in solo performances. Seven-year-old Sheryl Goyal enchanting with "Shrotam" at 11:05 AM. Judges – Devi Shankar, a passionate dancer; Gurumukh Ji, a theater artist and community supporter; and Amit Chakraborty, who recently danced with Hrithik Roshan – evaluated on technique, choreography, and energy. "All kids are winners," emphasized the emcee, as medals and certificates were handed out, fostering encouragement over competition.

Desi Games Rounds, interspersed throughout the day, injected playful chaos. From tug-of-war and lemon spoon relays for couples to scavenger hunts yielding prizes like free tickets to Falguni Pathak, Badshah, and Kanwar Grewal concerts, the games were innovative crowd-pullers. One highlight: guessing the number of bikes in the Chicago Bike Parade, with winner Aarohi from Aurora nailing it spot-on. "It's so easy to win prizes; just register and participate!" urged volunteers, as families formed teams for rapid-fire Antakshari and Bollywood medleys.
