Flood threat: More than half of the homes not included in FEMA's maps; a critical finding.

A new study has found that more than half of the homes facing flood risk in the United States are not included in the current maps of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). This critical finding comes from an analysis conducted by climate risk firm First Street.
First Street points out that the major reason for this discrepancy is that FEMA’s flood maps do not take rainfall and flash flooding into account. However, according to First Street's own data, many homes — such as those in Camp Mystic, Texas — are located in areas with extreme flood risk. As climate change continues to intensify the severity of flooding, these findings raise growing concern.
Experts warn that political inaction and pressure from real estate developers are causing delays in updating flood maps on time. This puts lives and property across the country at greater risk. Outdated maps mislead the public about actual flood threats and negatively affect disaster preparedness and response efforts.
