A law signed by former President Joe Biden in January is now boosting Social Security payments for millions, with retroactive lump-sum payouts also being issued. The Social Security Fairness Act repealed restrictions that reduced benefits for those receiving public retirement payments from state or local governments.
Who Benefits?
Around 3.2 million public service workers, including teachers, police officers, and firefighters, will now receive increased Social Security payments. The law applies retroactively from January 2024, meaning eligible individuals will also receive back pay for the missed amounts.
Payment Timeline
Retroactive payments started rolling out on February 24 and should reach most recipients by March’s end.
Increased monthly payments begin in April.
How Much More?
Payment increases vary:
Some may see only a slight boost.
Others could receive up to $1,000 more per month.
Surviving spouses may see $1,190 increases on average.
Those eligible will receive a notice by mail, but payments may arrive before the letter. The Social Security Administration advises recipients to wait until after their April payment before inquiring about changes.
