Suozzi Reappointed to Powerful Ways & Means Committee, Will Fight to Remove the SALT Deduction Cap

Feb 15 :
At the start of the 119th Congress, the Democratic Steering & Policy Committee announced that Congressman Tom Suozzi was reappointed to a coveted seat on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee. Suozzi also held this seat during the 116th and 117th Congresses.

The Ways and Means Committee is the chief tax-writing Committee in the House of Representatives. The Committee deals with taxation, trade and tariffs, Social Security, Medicare, and other key areas of federal economic policy.

In addition to other measures that support fiscal responsibility and tax fairness, Suozzi will use his Committee seat to continue to fight relentlessly for the removal of the SALT (State and Local Tax) deduction cap. As Co-Chair of the bipartisan SALT Caucus, the removal of this cap is one of Suozzi's top priorities in Congress.

Congressman Suozzi was a founding member of the Problem Solvers in 2017, serving as Vice-Chair of the group for his first three terms in Congress. This Congress, he serves alongside Republican Co-Chair Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania.

Suozzi will lead the Problem Solvers as they work to find common ground on issues of:

Budget, Tax, Appropriations, Debt and Deficit
Immigration and Border Security
Permitting, Energy and the Environment
Tariffs, Trade and Strategic Competition
Mental Health and Substance Abuse
Workforce and Training

Safeguarding Critical District Funding
President Trump’s recent federal funding freeze made the Great Neck/Manhasset Head Start program unable to access their critical funding. In response, Suozzi immediately convened the leadership of the department of Health and Human Services. Thankfully, Suozzi was able to ensure that funding will remain available for Head Start programs in our district. If they had not gotten access to their funds the same day, they would have been forced to shut their doors.

Stephanie Chenault is the director of Great Neck/Manhasset Head Start and a tireless champion for her program’s children and families.

“Congressman Suozzi spoke to everyone and anybody on our behalf to get this resolved and we are so grateful," Chenault said. "The program will be open Monday; we’re not closing.”

Defending Science Research on Long Island

Last week, Congressman Suozzi learned of Elon Musk and his DOGE staffers' actions that targeted National Institute of Health funding, jeopardizing critical scientific research at labs across NY03, including Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and the Feinstein Institute. Suozzi made sure to speak out about how dangerous that was. The cuts would threaten America's leadership in lifesaving scientific research on novel treatments and innovative models used by doctors and scientists across the globe.

"Why would we want to hamstring one of our greatest strengths, especially when we’re facing competition from very dangerous adversaries?" asked Congressman Suozzi.

Suozzi Introduces Three Bipartisan Bills to Increase Trade Fairness and Protect Against the Chinese Communist Party

In the first month of the 119th Congress, Congressman Suozzi introduced three bipartisan bills to safeguard American trade and homeland security against threats from the Chinese Communist Party and other foreign adversaries.

The SHIELD Against CCP Act, co-led with Rep. Dale Strong (R-AL), would establish a working group to identify, evaluate, and counter threats to homeland security by the Chinese Communist Party. The Restoring Trade Fairness Act, co-led with Rep. John Moolenaar (R-MI), is the first bipartisan bill that would revoke China’s Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) status. This status has allowed the CCP to engage in unfair trade practices that devastate the American manufacturing industry’s ability to compete, contribute to the theft of American intellectual property, and allow goods made with forced Uyghur labor in Xinjiang to enter our supply chain. Finally, the Import Security and Fairness Act, co-led with Rep. Neal Dunn (R-FL), would permanently close the dangerous de minimis loophole, ending a major illegal fentanyl route into our country and making it clear to the CCP that they cannot continue to flout our trade rules.

District Funding Roundup
In January, Congressman Suozzi helped secure $5 million in federal funding to support the Port Washington water district. These funds will help the district purchase water treatment systems to filter out PFAS and other forever chemicals. PFAS does not break down in the body or the environment, and has been linked to risk of cancers, decreases in fertility, developmental delays, and reduced immunity.

Suozzi Introduces Bill to Honor September 11th as a Federal Holiday

Congressman Suozzi introduced the Patriot Day Act this month. This bipartisan legislation would formally establish September 11th as a federal holiday called 'Patriot Day.' This is the first piece of legislation this Congress that Suozzi co-leads alongside Problem Solvers Co-Chair, Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA).

“The Patriot Day Act recognizes that September 11th, 2001 changed us forever. Our goal with this legislation is to let us never forget the pain and anguish that was visited upon us on that day. Let us never forget the extraordinary valor and selflessness of our first responders. Let us never forget the unbreakable spirit of unity and harmony that defined the weeks and months that followed that fateful day. And above all, let us rededicate ourselves to upholding the enduring dream and promise of America,” said Congressman Suozzi.

Suozzi Joined “The Daily Show,” Discussed Working with President Trump and Democratic Opposition

Congressman Suozzi joined Comedy Central’s late-night program, “The Daily Show,” with Jordan Klepper. On the show, Suozzi made it clear he will never abandon his values—and will oppose President Trump when necessary—but he will focus on working with the President to get the job done for the American people.

“You’ve got to resist when it’s appropriate, but the people want us to work together to solve problems," Congressman Tom Suozzi said.

Congressman Suozzi also appeared on other media programs, including FOX’s "Common Ground" with Bret Baier to discuss the SALT tax cap with Congresswoman Malliotakis, the "Raging Moderates" podcast with Jessica Tarlov, and ABC 7’s "Up Close" with Bill Ritter.

Suozzi Leads Legislation to Celebrate Korean and Italian American Legacies

This month, Congressman Suozzi introduced a resolution celebrating the alliance between United States and The Republic of Korea and a bill to begin the process of establishing a National Museum of Italian American history.

Suozzi introduced the US-ROK resolution in conjunction with Korea Day—the 80th anniversary of South Korea’s liberation from colonial rule. Joined by MinSun Kim, President of the Museum of Korean American Heritage, Suozzi received an honorary seventh-degree Taekwondo black belt by Grandmaster Dr. Lee Dong-sup, President of Kukkiwon, the governing body of Taekwondo, due to his long-standing support for the Korean American community.

“Over the past 122 years, Korean Americans have made invaluable contributions to our communities and the culture we share…My strong ties to the Korean communities on Long Island and in Queens reflect the deep friendship we share, making this recognition truly meaningful,” said Suozzi.

Suozzi also introduced the National Museum of Italian American History Commission Act, which would create a planning commission to examine the possibility of creating a Smithsonian Museum of Italian American History. He co-leads this bipartisan legislation alongside Congressman Michael Rulli (R-OH), a fellow Italian American.

“As a first-generation Italian American, I am proud to introduce this legislation,” said Suozzi.“My father was born in Ruvo del Monte, Italy, and immigrated to the United States as a child. His story, and the story of so many other Italian Americans of his generation, embodies the American dream and fulfills the very promise of this country. These stories deserve a platform to be told.”
