The "Arogyam Anandam – Let’s Defeat Cancer" public cancer prevention campaign, launched by the State Health Department for cancer prevention and treatment, has seen participation from over one lakh people, according to Health Minister Veena George. A total of 1,10,388 individuals underwent cancer screening as part of the initiative. The Health Department has planned year-long activities for this campaign.
The first phase of the campaign primarily focuses on women, screening for breast cancer, cervical cancer, and other types of cancer. Screening facilities have been set up in 1,321 government hospitals across the state. Among the 1,10,388 people screened, 5,185 have been referred for further tests due to suspected cancer. The minister assured that those diagnosed with cancer will receive treatment and continuous care.
The campaign is being conducted with the collective efforts of the government, private and cooperative sectors, volunteers, organizations, and the general public. Many types of cancer can be effectively treated if detected early. Screening is provided completely free of cost for individuals from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families, while those in the Above Poverty Line (APL) category can access tests at affordable rates, the Health Minister added.
