Sharon Murder Case Accused Greeshma Approaches High Court Seeking to Overturn Trial Court Verdict
Parassala native Greeshma, accused in the murder case of Sharon Raj by mixing pesticide in herbal medicine, has approached the High Court requesting the annulment of the trial court’s verdict. The Neyyattinkara Additional Sessions Court had sentenced Greeshma to death in the case. The High Court will consider her petition today itself, following her request for an expedited hearing.
Until the High Court makes a decision, Greeshma will not be granted bail or parole. She is hopeful that the High Court will reduce her sentence. Currently, she is housed in Cell No. 11 at the Attakulangara Jail in Thiruvananthapuram. There is a possibility of sentence reduction if she appeals to higher courts, which is why she is being kept in a regular prison cell. If the High Court rejects her plea, she can approach the Supreme Court. If the Supreme Court upholds the death sentence, she will have the option to file a mercy petition with the President. The execution will take place only if the President rejects the petition, at which point she will be moved to an isolated cell.
Greeshma was sentenced to death last month. The court considered it a "rarest of the rare" case while delivering the verdict. Her uncle, Nirmalakumar, was also sentenced to three years in prison for his involvement. The crime took place in 2022.
Greeshma and Sharon were in a romantic relationship. However, after her family arranged another marriage proposal, she decided to get rid of Sharon. Initially, she tried to convince him to end the relationship, but when he refused, she planned to kill him. First, she attempted to poison him by mixing paracetamol tablets in juice, but this failed. She then mixed pesticide in herbal medicine and gave it to Sharon.
Following severe health complications, Sharon sought medical treatment. While undergoing treatment, his condition worsened. Realizing that he was dying, Sharon revealed that Greeshma had given him the poisoned herbal medicine.
