Trump Imposes Tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China; Countries Vow Retaliation

U.S. President Donald Trump recently signed an order imposing a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico and a 10% tariff on goods from China. As a continuation of this decision, Trump announced on Saturday night that tariffs had been imposed on these countries.

Explaining the reasoning behind this move, Trump posted on Truth Social, stating that the decision was made under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). "The threat of illegal foreign nationals to our citizens is increasing. Fentanyl and other deadly drugs are killing our people. We must protect Americans, and as President, it is my duty to ensure everyone's safety. I promised in my campaign to stop the flood of illegal immigrants and drugs across our borders, and Americans overwhelmingly voted for it," he wrote.

Trump’s decision has sparked widespread criticism from various parts of the world. In response to his sudden move, all three affected countries have announced countermeasures.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that Canada is prepared to face the 25% tariff imposed by the U.S. He confirmed that the U.S. intends to impose a 25% tariff on most Canadian goods and a 10% tariff on energy products starting February 4. Meanwhile, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also responded to Trump’s 25% tariff on Mexico, stating that Mexico would take retaliatory measures, including tariffs against the U.S.

Following Trump's order imposing a 10% tariff on China, China's Ministry of Commerce strongly opposed the move, expressing complete dissatisfaction and announcing retaliatory actions. In an official statement, China declared that it firmly rejects the decision and will take necessary countermeasures.
