FBI Launches Investigation Following Trump Campaign's Claims of Iran Hacking

Washington, DC - August 13:
The United States Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) announced its intention to conduct an investigation into allegations of hacking into the internal communications of the presidential campaign of Donald Trump, which the campaign had attributed to the Iranian government.
Microsoft notified the former president's campaign that Iran had compromised one of its websites, according to the statement he made on August 10. The president claimed that Iran "only able to get publicly available information."

The Washington Post reported on August 12 that senior advisors to Joe Biden's and Kamala Harris's campaigns are the subjects of an alleged hack that the FBI is examining. Several individuals told the newspaper that the FBI started looking into the matter in June, while Biden was still a presidential candidate, since they thought Iran was involved in the efforts to steal data from two US presidential campaigns.

A request for comment was not promptly responded to by the Harris campaign. After Joe Biden dropped his candidacy last month, Harris became the Democratic candidate for president. Refuting claims that it breached the Trump campaign, Iran's government has issued a denial.

Researchers from Microsoft published a study on August 9 that suggested hackers with ties to the Iranian government attempted to breach the account of a "high-ranking official" on a U.S. presidential campaign in June. This information has been used by Trump's campaign.
The individual was allegedly targeted after hackers gained access to the account of a former political adviser, according to the article. The identity of the targets were not elaborated upon.
