President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden Offer Condolences for Wayanad Landslides

Washington, DC, August 3:
US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden offered condolences to India following the Wayanad landslides that killed over 300 people.
"Jill and I extend our deepest condolences to all those affected by the deadly landslides in Kerala, India," the White House announced. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. Indian service members and first responders aiding the complicated recovery effort are brave. “We will keep the Indian people in our thoughts during this difficult time,” declared the White House.

Officials reported on Friday that 210 people died in the landslides that hit Meppadi in Wayanad district on July 30 after heavy rain, while 187 were discharged from hospitals. Officials said 210 bodies and 134 body parts have been retrieved, including 96 males, 85 females, and 29 children. Relatives identified 146 bodies. The administration finished the post-mortem of 207 bodies and 134 body parts from the event site.

Officials say 84 patients are being treated in Wayanad, Kozhikode, and Malappuram hospitals and 187 have been discharged. 273 people were hospitalized after the incident. On July 30, numerous landslides in Wayanad killed 308 people, according to Kerala Health Minister Veena George. On July 30, two large landslides in Wayanad's Chooralmala and Mundakkai caused significant devastation and property loss.
