Indian American woman rescued from chains in Maharashtra forest

On July 27, a disturbing incident occurred in the Sindhudurg region of Maharashtra, a western Indian state, where a 50-year-old American woman of Indian descent was discovered in a forest with her leg bound to a tree. A shepherd in the Sonurli village heard the woman's screams and immediately contacted the authorities after discovering Lalita Kayi. A photocopy of her United States passport and an Aadhaar card bearing an address in Tamil Nadu were among the documents found at the site by the police.
Media sources citing an authority state that the woman is now receiving treatment for mental health difficulties and is not in danger. She was discovered in the jungle in a state of extreme dehydration and starvation by the police, and the relentless downpour in the region had only made her situation worse.
Kayi was unable to make a formal statement, but an investigation by the police found that she had been living in India for ten years after her visa had ended. Her alleged Tamil Naduan spouse may have strangled her and then run away, according to the authorities. Teams of investigators have been sent to several places, including Tamil Nadu and Goa, in an effort to locate her family and learn more about what happened.
