US Announces New Patriot Air Defense System for Ukraine

Washington, DC July 12:
US President Joe Biden presented a new military aid package for Ukraine. The package, valued at USD 225 million, includes a Patriot air defense system, which will assist Ukraine in protecting its skies from Russian bombings, according to The Hill.
During their meeting at the NATO Summit in Washington DC on July 10, Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made this announcement.

America has pledged to supply Ukraine with two Patriot systems; this is the second one. The equipment will be swiftly transferred from the United States military's inventory to Ukraine, according to The Hill. Among Biden's many announcements made during the meeting this week was the air defense system.During the beginning of the event on July 9, Biden hinted at a "historic donation of air defence equipment for Ukraine," wherein the five member states—the US, Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, and Italy—would supply Kyiv "with the equipment for five additional strategic air defence systems."

In a subsequent joint statement, the United States, Germany, and Romania announced their intention to supply Patriot batteries to Ukraine, while the Netherlands offered to supply parts for an additional Patriot battery and Italy offered a SAMP-T air defense system.
The United States and its allies will supply Kyiv with "dozens of additional tactical air defence systems" in the next months, according to Biden.

Earlier this week, member states of NATO committed to bolstering Ukraine's defenses by sending additional weaponry to the country in response to Russian aggression. This assurance follows a recent spike in bloodshed, which included the July 8 missile attack on a children's hospital in Kyiv, which murdered 42 innocent people. A total of forty missiles were launched on five cities in Ukraine, including the hospital. With NATO's backing, Ukraine will be better able to fight back against Russian aggression.

Thirty-one North American and European countries make up NATO, a military alliance devoted to mutual defense and collaboration. According to a Pentagon list of the aid, the USD 225 million package includes a variety of munitions, including ammunition for high mobility artillery rocket systems, Stinger antiaircraft missiles, Stinger, Javelin, and AT-4 antiarmor systems, as well as more 155 mm and 105 mm artillery rounds.

After last week's pledge to increase military aid to Ukraine by USD 150 million through a unique mechanism that allows the President to swiftly provide weapons from US stocks, the new declaration follows suit. The United States also promised to lend Ukraine $2.2 billion so that the country could purchase advanced weapon systems made in the United States, including Patriot missiles and NASAM air defense systems.
