US Knee Surgery Successful, Dalai Lama Reports Good Health

New York , July 8 :
The Dalai Lama, spiritual head of Tibet, sent a video message to his supporters on July 6th, honoring his 89th birthday, in which he stated that he was doing well after knee surgery in New York. Last month, the inspiring Buddhist exile, who is known around the world for his dogged pursuit of more independence for his native Tibet, departed from his new home in the hill town of Dharamsala in India to receive treatment.
Despite being over 90 years old, he claims to be in good health, with the exception of some minor leg pain, in a video message that he posted to his website. Absolutely, because that is a natural part of becoming older. Please don't worry; I am generally doing fine.
Fearing for his safety, the 23-year-old Dalai Lama fled the Tibetan capital Lhasa after a 1959 rebellion was crushed by Chinese soldiers.
After handing up secular power to a government selected democratically by roughly 130,000 Tibetans worldwide, he resigned as political leader of his people in 2011.
In spite of this, his fellow exiles continue to worry that Beijing may choose an opponent successor to further consolidate its rule over Tibet at his elderly age. China was very critical last month when a delegation of prominent US lawmakers, including former House speaker Nancy Pelosi, met with the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government-in-exile in Dharamsala.
