After Tough Debate, Indian American Organizations Rally Behind President Biden

July 8 :
In the wake of last week's dismal debate, numerous Indian American groups have pledged their support for President Joe Biden, despite growing calls for him to withdraw from the race. In the days following June 27, Democrats have engaged in deep introspection in response to Joe Biden's unpredictable performance during the debate, which stood in stark contrast to the assured performance of Republican front-runner Donald Trump. Biden fumbled for words, pausing mid-sentence on occasion.

Trump, who began the fight on the offensive and maintained it throughout the 90-minute contest presented by CNN in Atlanta, Georgia, frequently trailed off incongruously, failing to defend himself from spurious allegations and falsehoods. Both admirers and detractors of the president have voiced concerns about his mental and physical health as he approaches the age of 81. After the debate, people started yelling for Biden to "do the right thing" and step down from his position. Vice President Kamala Harris is one of several suggested candidates. If the first female vice president who is Black and South Asian American were to be disregarded, according to political experts, it would reflect poorly on the Democratic Party.

Electing Trump—who was just found guilty on 34 criminal charges related to a hush money case involving adult film actress Stormy Daniels—is not a choice, according to Krishnan. Trump is a convicted felon, serial liar, and con artist whose ambitions could undermine our democracy. Biden has the full backing of South Asians for Biden, according to Harini Krishnan, the group's national director. That was one tough debate he had. He admitted, It was a terrible performance; I stutter, and I'm old. Krishnan, who is also an elect member of the Democratic National Committee, stated that this does not detract from the historic achievements of the past three and a half years that have helped our communities. The most South Asians have ever been part of Biden's government, making it the most diverse in history.

Separately, a Supreme Court decision that presidents are immune from prosecution for any activity made while in office greatly favored Trump. That ruling caused New York hush money case judge Juan Merchan to postpone sentencing Trump until September, if not later. The Republican National Convention kicks out in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on July 15, and his sentencing was set for July 11. South Asians for Biden, which was founded in April by the same group that established South Asians for America, has already recruited volunteers in ten states. Krishnan claims that the group is aiming to establish teams in every state by the end of September and is presently focusing on six states that are crucial battlegrounds.

As he went on to tell this reporter, Biden requires a more capable debate preparation group. The party must take swift action to underscore the awfulness of Trump's presidency. Additionally, AAPI Victory Fund co-founder Shekar Narasimhan has stated his unwavering support for Biden. Narasimhan tweeted, Awful debate during the debate. Hard to bear. If people's initial thought was that Biden is too elderly, that got reinforced. Even if the sentiment that "Trump is unfit to be president" was already there, it gained more traction.

On the other hand, Mukesh Advani, who runs the website Indian Americans for Biden-Harris, had a different opinion. Who would have thought I'd say this, but I'm among those who are demanding that Biden step down gracefully so that Kamala may lead the ticket. Her sole disadvantage in a world that is still prejudiced is that she is a woman of color, but she will be able to overcome this. Advani expressed her regret but stated that Biden had little chance of winning.
