Cultural Event Celebrates Diversity and Strengthens US-India Relations, Hosted by Gandhian Society

June 21 :
As a way to honour diversity and foster better ties between India and the US, the non-profit Gandhian Society—whose mission is to spread the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi—organized a cultural festival. More than 25 organisations "representing the vibrant tapestry of the Indian diaspora in the New York area" were represented at the event, which took place on June 18, 2024, according to a news release.

Binaya Srikanta Pradhan, the Indian consul general in New York, was the honoured guest. While the Indian Consul General was here this evening, the visit of other notable diplomats was also cause for celebration, according to Gandhian Society secretary Mahesh Wani. We are rejoicing in the chance to unite different communities and cultures, a concept that meant a great deal to Mahatma Gandhi.

According to Wani, our organisation promotes an inclusive culture. Our more seasoned members provide direction and vision, while our younger members carry it out. The longevity of the Society and the development of its future leaders are both aided by this mentoring programme. A cultural performance showcasing the many Indian-American identities was the evening's highlight.

Several prominent members of the community and distinguished guests made speeches at the ceremony. Edison Township Mayor Sam Joshi extended a warm welcome to the Consul General and conveyed his gratitude to all involved organisations. Woodbridge Township's mayor, John McCormac, recently addressed the Indian-American community and praised its many contributions to the town and its residents.

Several prominent business figures were also there. The proprietors of Royal Albert's Palace in Fords, NJ, Albert Jasani and Dr. Dinesh Patel, who also served as event hosts, warmly greeted the attendees and extended an offer to hold such consulate activities in the future that would benefit the community.

Parikh Worldwide Media chairman Dr. Sudhir Parikh has expressed his admiration for the Gandhian Society's humanitarian efforts and has promised to remain a supporter of the organisation.

Community organisation representatives were also present. The Consul General, who assumed leadership of the Indian Consulate earlier this year, was greeted by Kenny Desai, a former president of the Federation of Indian Associations of Tri-state, Bharat Rana, president of the Federation of Seniors Associations of North America (FISANA), and Jahanvi Mehta of the Oak Tree Road Business Association in Edison, NJ.

Veganism and Gandhian principles were discussed by Anil Narang of World Vegan Vision, who is a descendant of Mahatma Gandhi. While meeting with the Consul General, Upendra Chivukula—chairman of the New Jersey board of public utilities—offered his and the state's support.

Pradhan, the Consul General, expressed his gratitude to the Gandhian Society for hosting the occasion and the kind reception. A tabla ensemble, a traditional Mallakhamb performance, Indian classical music, and an Odissi dance presentation were all parts of the cultural display that he enjoyed. He praised the Indian diaspora for staying true to their roots while helping their new communities and for carrying on their traditions, beliefs, and culture. At the end of the programme, Gandhian Society founder Bhadra Butala gave a vote of thanks.
