Tornadoes in the central United States kill 18 people and put millions more at risk of severe weather.

May 27, Washington, DC, USA: Tragic tornadoes in the US central region killed 18 people, including 4 children, and millions more are still at risk from extreme weather, according to CNN. wide hail, catastrophic winds, and a strong twister were expected across wide portions of the United States on Sunday, affecting almost 109 million people. The mid-Mississippi, Ohio, and Tennessee River valleys were particularly vulnerable.

According to the Storm Prediction Centre, "violent tornadoes, extreme hail and corridors of widespread wind damage" were predicted as the storms advanced eastward. Nearly 4.7 million people are affected by the watch, which extends throughout several states and counties in the Midwest, including Missouri (containing St. Louis and Jefferson City), Illinois (including Carbondale), Kentucky (including Paducah), and Tennessee.

There were eleven tornado sightings on Sunday, and Memorial Day is likely to bring much more intense weather. There are approximately 135,000 consumers without power in Kentucky, which is where the majority of the power outages are occurring. The National Weather Service states that this particular type of tornado watch is only issued when there is an exceptionally high likelihood of several tornadoes with a minimum intensity of EF2 and the potential for them to be long-lived in the given area.

Throughout the watch region, strong supercell thunderstorms will be forming all the way until this evening. There will probably be multiple tornadoes, and some of them will be rather strong. The Storm Prediction Centre warned of the possibility of very severe wind gusts and very large hail. According to CNN, the Storm Prediction Centre has issued a tornado warning, predicting multiple twisters along with widespread wind gusts up to 85 mph, hail bigger than baseballs, and possibly more.
