Deportation proceedings initiated against truck driver of Indian ancestry following fatal 2018 bus incident in Canada

May 25, Canada:
There has been an order for the deportation of an Indian-origin truck driver who was responsible for the tragic bus disaster that involved the Humboldt Broncos minor hockey team in Canada, according to CBC News of Canada. During a hearing in Calgary, the Immigration and Refugee Board made the announcement about Jaskirat Singh Sidhu.

The result was inevitable, according to Michael Greene, Sidhu's lawyer, because proving his non-citizen status and the gravity of his conduct were the only requirements for deportation.  Jaskirat Singh Sidhu possesses permanent resident status in Canada and hails from India.

After serving an eight-year term for reckless driving in a 2018 bus disaster in Saskatchewan that killed 16 and injured thirteen, Sidhu was released on parole. The deportation process might take months or perhaps years, according to his lawyer, and there are still many more legal steps to go through. The lawyer for Sidhu filed applications with the Federal Court in December, claiming that border officers ignored his client's sorrow and spotless criminal record. However, the court dismissed these arguments. The second review was something he hoped the court would require the border agency to do.

“This is part of the sadness of the whole process,” Greene remarked before Friday's hearing. As a result, permanent residents have little recourse to have their individual situations taken into account, according to CBC News.
Sidhu's legal team plans to request the return of his permanent residence status on humanitarian grounds once he is ordered deported. He concluded, "But in the meantime, he has no status."

According to Michael Greene, Sidhu will not be arrested right after the hearing concludes. As his application for permanent residence status is being examined, he informed Sidhu that a pre-removal risk assessment must be conducted.

He said it might be months or perhaps years before it's finished. Several members of the bus crash victims' families have reportedly demanded that Jaskirat Singh Sidhu be deported. in 2018, an Indian permanent resident named Jaskirat Singh Sidhu careened into the path of a junior hockey team's bus en route to a playoff game in rural Saskatchewan. The incident occurred at an intersection near Tisdale.
