Virginia Lieutenant Governor election is being contested by Indian-American Ghazala Hashmi.

May 13 :
Sen. Ghazala Hashmi (15 Chesterfield), an Indian-American politician and current senator from Virginia, has just begun running for the Democratic candidature for lieutenant governor. "I'm running because we are just one vote away, in the State Senate, from MAGA extremism overrunning our schools, reproductive health care, gun safety measures, voting rights, and much more," Hashmi stated passionately. In my bid to become our next lieutenant governor, I intend to do more than just further my career; I intend to strengthen the Democratic brick wall. Someone who is both successful and progressive should be appointed to that position.
One other Virginia state senator who has declared candidature for lieutenant governor is Aaron Rouse. Despite being a heavy underdog in the 2019 primary and general elections, Hashmi managed to secure the crucial seat for the State Senate.
"When I first ran, I realised that any one of us can make a positive, meaningful difference. If we want to protect our freedoms, stand against hate, and build a future that uplifts all of us, including our most vulnerable, we must always fight for what is right," Hadamimi said in a statement. As individuals, we must speak out and refuse to tolerate injustice, especially when it affects those closest to us.
After 25 years in the classroom and as an academic administrator, Hashmi ran for office and is now chair of the Senate Committee on Education and Health.
"As a mother of two girls and as someone who won the ‘Defender of Choice’ award in 2023, I have fought hard to protect reproductive healthcare and will continue to secure reproductive rights in Virginia as Lieutenant Governor," she declared.
Republican nominee for lieutenant governor Babur Lateef is allegedly also running as the chair of the Prince William County School Board. But no Republican has reportedly declared their candidature as of this writing.
