COVID-19 cases reach 52,952 in India, death toll 1,783


New Delhi, May 7 The total number of COVID-19 cases in the country mounted to 52,952 on Thursday evening, with 3,561 new cases and 89 deaths in the last 24 hours, the Union Health Ministry stated.

Of the total cases, 35902 are the active cases, 15266 people have recovered, and 1,783 people have succumbed to the disease.

Maharashtra remained the worst hit state with a total number of cases rising to 16,758, followed by Gujarat which reported 6,625 cases and Delhi with 5,532 cases, according to the Health Ministry data.

Maharashtra has also recorded 651 deaths, the highest number of casualties among all the states.

 Maharashtra recorded a staggering 1,233 new Covid-19 cases and 34 deaths, with Mumbai crossing the 10,000 case mark, officials said here on Wednesday.



With 34 fatalities, the state death toll shot up from to 651 and the total number of Coronavirus patients increased to touch 16,758.

Given the increasing number of cases and deaths, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray appealed to the defence, railways, ports and all other central undertakings in the state to give their premises as well as ICU beds for Covid-19 patients.

He made a personal appeal to Indian Army, Indian Navy, Indian Railways, ports and other central organisations stationed in Maharashtra, to take care of the fresh influx expected after the lockdown is lifted and international flights resume operations.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Rajesh Tope said the state government has ordered all private doctors - around 15,000 in Mumbai - to either restart their clinics and nursing homes, or work for government hospitals in view of the Corona situation.

"We are also appealing to all private doctors to work at least 15 days in government hospitals and keep their clinics/nursing homes open, and failure to comply would attract action," he said.

Tope added that the state presently has 54 testing labs including 24 in the private sector and 30 in government, where a total of around 8,000-10,000 Covid-19 tests are carried out daily, which is one of the reasons for the high number of cases coming to light.

The state government is in the process of setting up a Wuhan-like 1,000-bed hospital for isolating and treating Covid-19 patients at the Bandra Kurla Complex grounds which will be operational by the month-end.

Of the total 34 deaths, 25 were recorded in Mumbai alone - taking the city toll to 412 and the number of Covid-19 positive patients in the city shot up by 769 to 10,714.

Dharavi alone recorded 68 new cases, taking the total in Asia's biggest slum to 733 cases and 21 deaths.

Besides Mumbai's 26 deaths, Pune recorded 3 fresh deaths as did Akola while one death each was recorded from Jalgaon and Solapur.

The dead comprised 21 men and 13 women, and nearly 79 percent of them suffered from other serious ailments such as diabetes, hypertension, heart problems and asthma.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (Thane Division) continued to cause major worries with 441 Covid-19 deaths and 12,716 patients.

Pune Division trails a distant second with 132 deaths and 2,351 patients.

The next area of concern is Nashik Division with 31 deaths and 632 positive cases, followed by Aurangabad Division with 12 deaths and 441 patients and finally, Akola Division with 20 deaths and 273 patients.

Besides, new cases were recorded in Nashik Division (61), Kolhapur Division (09), Aurangabad Division (36), Akola Division (31), and Nagpur Division (01).

On the positive side, 275 fully cured patients returned home, taking the number of those discharged to 3,094.

Meanwhile, the number of people in home quarantine increased to 211,112 and those in institutional quarantine increased from 12,456 to 13,107 while and the state's containment zones increased from 943 to 1,048 today.

As many as 11,692 teams have carried out a survey of a population of around 51.1 lakhs in the state till date.

Record 428 new cases in Delhi; total 5,532

 (ew Delhi, May 6 (IANS) With record 428 new coronavirus cases reported in a day, the total positive cases reported so far in Delhi reached 5,532 on Wednesday, the Health Department said.


With one death in the last 24 hours, the death toll due to coronavirus reached 65, it said. Among the 65 dead, 56 had other serious diseases.

A total of 74 patients recovered on Wednesday, according to the Delhi health bulletin.

"A total of 1,542 patients have recovered so far in Delhi while 3,925 cases are active," the Health Department said.

So far, 71,934 tests have been conducted in Delhi.

On May 3, 427 new cases were reported in a day.

TN records 771 new infections, death toll rises to 35

 Chennai: As many as 771 persons tested positive for coronavirus in Tamil Nadu over the past 24 hours and two Covid-19 patients lost their lives, the Health Department said on Wednesday.


In a statement, the Health Department said the new infections have taken the total tally to 4,829.

It also announced the death of two persons taking the death toll to 35.

The Department said 31 Covid-19 patients who got cured and were discharged from various hospitals taking the total number to 1,516 persons.

A total of 13,413 samples were tested over the past 24 hours.

State capital Chennai continued to see highest number of infections at 324 on Wednesday followed by Ariyalur (188), Cuddalore (95) and Kancheepuram (45).

The number of infected children in the age group 0-12 went up to 254.

The total number of active cases in Tamil Nadu stands at 3,275.

COVID-19: 28 more deaths, 380 new cases in Gujarat

 Gandhinagar, May 6  With 380 new coronavirus cases and 28 more deaths on Wednesday, Gujarat's total positive cases climbed up to 6,625 and death toll to 396. As many as 119 patients were cured and discharged from hospitals across the state on Wednesday.


Over 300 new corona cases hae been added daily for the last eight days in Gujarat, with Ahmedabad contributing over 75 per cent of these cases.

On Wednesday, state capital Ahmedabad reported 291 of the 380 new cases, followed by Surat 31, Vadodara 16, Banaskantha 15, Botad 7, Bhavnagar 6, Gandhinagar 4, Panchmahals, Dahod and Mahisagar 2 each and Anand, Kheda and Sabarkantha one each.

Along with the rising number of positive cases, casualties in Gujarat are also climbing rapidly. As many as 187 lives have been lost to coronavirus in the last eight days.

Of 28 patients who died on Wednesday, Ahmedabad had the highest 25 casualties. One patients each from Gandhinagar, Vadodara and Sabarkantha also succumbed to the virus. Fifteen of the 28 patients did not have any comorbidity.

Till date, 298 of the total 396 corona deaths are in Ahmedabad alone (almost 75%), followed by 33 in Surat, 31 in Vadodara, 6 in Anand and 5 each in Bhavnagar and Gandhinagar.

On Wednesday, of the 119 patients discharged, maximum 74 were from Ahmedabad, followed by Surat 32, Vadodara 6, Botad 2 and Anand, Dang, Gandhinagar, Mahesana and Valsad one each. Of the total, 70 were males and 49 females.

Till date, 1,500 patients have been discharged in the state.

Of the total 6,625 corona cases in Gujarat, Ahmedabad leads with 4,735, followed by Surat 772, Vadodara 421, Gandhinagar 83, Bhavnagar 82, Anand 76, Banaskantha 64, Rajkot 62, Panchmahals 51, Botad 48, Mahisagar and Mahesana 42 each, Bharuch 27, Patan 24, Aravalli 22, Kheda 17, Dahod 15, Chotta Udepur 14, Narmada 12, Sabarkantha 10, Navsari 8, Kutch 7, Valsad 6, Jamnagar 5, Porbandar, Gir-Somnath and Devbhumi Dwarka 3 each, Junagadh, Tapi and Dang 2 each, and Morbi and Surendranagar one each.

The health authorities have conducted 95,191 tests so far in Gujarat, of which 6,625 tested positive and 88,566 negative.

There are 4,729 active cases at present, of which the condition of 4,703 is stable, whereas 26 critical patients are still on ventilators.

Quarantined patients in the state total 58,063, including 53,444 in home quarantine, 4,392 in government facilities and 227 in private facilities.
