Alejandro González Iñárritu's “The Revenant” has topped the nominations list for the 88th Oscars having bagged nominations under 12 categories, including Best Picture and Best Director.

The film, a semi-biographical western film set in 1823 Montana and South Dakota, has also been nominated in the categories for Actor in a Leading Role, Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Visual Effects, Best Costume Design, Best Sound Mixing, Best Makeup and Hairstyling and Best Sound Editing.

Its lead actor Leonardo DiCaprio, who has been nominated for Best Actor three times and Best Supporting Actor once, will be up against last year's winner Eddie Redmayne again.

Following "The Revenant", George Miller's "Mad Max: Fury Road" has been nominated under 10 categories. “Mad Max: Fury Road” has been nominated for the Oscars under the same ten categories as “The Revenant” except for the Actor in a leading role and Actor in a supporting role.

“Mad Max: Fury Road” is an action film, the fourth instalment in the Mad Max franchise, which is set in a future desert wasteland where gasoline and water are scarce commodities.

While "The Revenant" bagged three Golden Globes for Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Director this year, "Mad Max: Fury Road" failed to pick up any Golden Globe award.

The 88th Oscars will be held on February 28 at the Dolby Theatre here.
