Victory Vibes at City Hall - Lights, Laughter, and Lions Light Up Chicago’s Diwali Dream

Lights of Unity: Chicago’s Diwali Illuminates Hearts Amid Global Shadows
Rama’s Return in the Windy City: A Midwestern Miracle of Light and Legacy
Chicago, IL: In the heart of Chicago’s bustling Loop, where skyscrapers pierce the autumn sky like modern-day minarets, a symphony of light unfolded on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at City Hall, an iconic public building transformed with colorful Diwali décor. It was no ordinary afternoon; it was Diwali the Festival of Lights — brought to life by the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) Chicago and the INDO-US Lions Club, in heartfelt collaboration with Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas .
As the clock struck 3:30 PM under soft October skies, hundreds gathered — not just to celebrate an ancient tradition, but to kindle a flame of hope in a world shadowed by uncertainty.

The air carried the gentle fragrance of marigolds and incense, mingling with the crisp Lake Michigan breeze. A family in shimmering saris and elegant kurtas stood alongside city officials in tailored suits — faces glowing with anticipation. Adults and children clutched tiny diyas, clay lamps symbolizing faith and unity. This was more than an event — it was a beacon of togetherness, a defiant glow reminding all that light triumphs over darkness, and unity over division.
The celebration began with excitement as organizers The City Treasurer Maria Pappas along with Sunil Shah, Hina Trivedi, Anu Malhotra, and Ajeet Singh — pillars of Chicago’s vibrant Indian diaspora — welcomed the gathering. Entry was secured with two IDs, reflecting the cautious optimism of our times. Yet once inside the hall’s embrace, barriers dissolved into smiles. “Join us to light up Chicago together with Unity, Joy & Tradition!” the invitations had read — and they truly delivered.

As the afternoon sun dipped toward the horizon, Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas, radiant as ever, opened the ceremony with heartfelt words:
“Diwali greetings to all of you.” Her message of light and gratitude set the tone for the evening — a reminder that, in a world troubled by conflicts and chaos, light still finds its way. “Let this light of Diwali shine — today and always.”
Mariyana Spyropoulos, clerk of Circuit Court of Cook County & Michael Puccinelli, Press Secretary also joined the celebration.
Then came a moment of spiritual resonance. Anu Malhotra, President of FIA Chicago, took the stage, her calm and inspiring presence radiating serenity.
“Diwali is a festival of lights, but more than that, it brings communities, hearts, and people together with gratitude and joy,” she said. Explaining the ancient roots of the celebration — Lord Rama’s homecoming after 14 years of exile — she reminded the gathering that goodness always triumphs over evil.

Guiding the crowd through a brief prayer and chanting “Om” thrice, the hall filled with peaceful vibrations.
“The light in your hand represents the light within you, and the flower represents your heart — pure and ready to spread love,” Anu shared, as diyas flickered and petals glowed in reverence. Together, the crowd recited the Sanskrit shloka:
May Almighty take us from darkness to light, negativity to positivity?
May all be happy? May all be peaceful? May all celebrate life every day?
May there be peace — within and all around.”
Tears glistened, smiles spread, and applause thundered — the energy of shared humanity filling the hall.

A special guest, the Consul General of Ukraine in Chicago, arrived with his assistant, greeted with deep appreciation. “Thank you for having me here. Let the good win over the tough times,” he shared — a simple, heartfelt reflection from a nation still at war, turning the festival into an act of global solidarity.
Representing India, Deputy Consul General Mr. K.D. Thokchom conveyed greetings and appreciation to FIA and the State of Illinois:
“Namaste and good afternoon. Wishing everyone a very Happy Diwali.”
Sunil Shah, Chairman of FIA Chicago, then delivered a heartfelt message, warmly welcoming everyone to this grand celebration of Diwali. He reflected on the deeper meaning of the festival, saying,
“Diwali reminds us that when we come together with light in our hearts and purpose in our actions, no darkness can prevail. It is a celebration of hope, goodness, and new beginnings.”

Brij Sharma, Chairman of UPA, also joined the celebration, expressing his joy in being part of an event that unites communities through the timeless message of Diwali — light over darkness, and togetherness over division.
Hina Trivedi extended warm thanks on behalf of FIA Chicago and the INDO-US Lions Club. “We thank Maria Pappas for welcoming us today. Maria always goes above and beyond, and her entire staff worked tirelessly for months to make this possible.”
Maria responded with heartfelt reflection:
“We are living in a period of darkness and anger, but it is wonderful to be at an event that reminds us light will always overcome darkness.”
Dancer Madhura Sane of Nritya Natya Academy then graced the stage with a stunning classical performance — a dance of rhythm and devotion that brought Diwali’s story alive through movement and music.

The celebration continued with proclamations and honors. Sunil Shah presented an official proclamation from Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, recognizing FIA Chicago for its leadership and cultural outreach in strengthening Illinois’ vibrant diversity.
Awards followed for outstanding community service — including Sunil Shah, Anu Malhotra, and Ajeet Singh, honored for their tireless dedication to cultural unity and service.
As the clock neared 4:00 PM, Anu Malhotra distributed Diwali prasad — sweet offerings symbolizing blessings and gratitude — followed by delicious refreshments and hot tea.

As twilight descended upon Chicago, diyas still glowing in hands and hearts, the essence of Diwali lingered. This celebration at the Cook County Hall transcended boundaries — it wasn’t just a cultural event; it was a universal message of hope.
In a world flickering with uncertainty, FIA Chicago and the INDO-US Lions Club reminded us that one flame can ignite a thousand more. Victory isn’t only Rama’s — it’s ours, when we dare to light the way.
As we reflect on this luminous evening, we honor the souls — Maria Pappas , Sunil Shah, Anu Malhotra, Hina Trivedi,— whose vision and compassion turn plazas into places of promise. In times of shadow, such events remind us that humanity’s true light shines brightest when shared.
At Asian Media USA, we celebrate these bridges of hope for they illuminate not just nights, but futures.
Happy Diwali may your inner lamp burn eternal.
