Media Must Remain Free to Safeguard Democracy: MP V. K. Sreekandan

Edison, New Jersey:
A free and independent media is the cornerstone of democracy, said Member of Parliament V. K. Sreekandan, while addressing the 11th International Media Conference organized by the India Press Club of North America at the Sheraton Hotel, Edison.
He warned that when the voice of the media is silenced, the foundations of democracy begin to weaken. “Those in power no longer wish to hear inconvenient truths,” he said, adding that similar trends are evident even in advanced nations like the United States.
Reflecting on his career as a journalist with Malayala Manorama, Sreekandan recalled that journalism in earlier decades required dedication, patience, and courage, especially when communication tools were limited and every story demanded personal effort.
The event was attended by Edison Mayor Sam Joshi and Ranni MLA Pramod Narayanan, who both praised the India Press Club for promoting responsible journalism and fostering unity among Malayali media professionals across North America. MP Sreekandan appreciated the organization’s ongoing commitment to truth, transparency, and public accountability.
Prominent media professionals present at the conference included Johny Lukose (Director of News, Manorama News TV), Hashmi Taj Ibrahim (Senior News Editor, 24 News), Abgeoth Varghese (News Editor, Asianet News), Sujaya Parvathy S. (Coordinating Editor, Reporter Live), Mothy Rajesh (Senior Sub Editor & Senior Reporter, Mathrubhumi TV), and Leen B. Jesmas (Consulting Editor, News 18 Kerala).
Also in attendance were Kuryan Pampadi, Sajimon Antony (FOKANA President), and Baiju Varghese (FOMA General Secretary).
