Canada implements a limit on the number of study permit applications accepted

April 8 :
Canada has lately announced modifications to its immigration regulations, which has made it one of the most popular destinations for students from India.
Canadian universities were the destination of choice for over 319,000 Indian students in 2023. Indian students accounted for 40% of the 800,000 student permits awarded in 2022. There is now a limit on applications due to the recent adjustments to visa application fees.
In an effort to control the increasing number of foreign students studying in Canada, the country's immigration, refugee, and citizenship minister, Marc Miller, made a public announcement regarding a nationwide cap on study permit applications.
By 2024, Canada hopes to have issued 485,000 international study permits. A reduction of 97,000 permits, representing 20% of the anticipated extension applications from current students, is incorporated into this total. The total number of study permits to be issued this year is 364,000, with an additional 24,000 set aside as a safety net. With a 60% approval rate for study permit applications in Canada, the goal for 2024 is 606,000 applications.
Every year, almost 20% of students ask for an extension and end up staying in the nation. Consequently, IRCC stated that their revised goal for accepted study permits in 2024 is 364,000, after deducting that number (97,000) from their original aim of 485,000 and setting aside a modest buffer to accommodate other variances. Some provinces and territories will get a higher volume of applications for study permits than others.
