Celebration of 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi

New York October 03, 2019 The Consulate General of India in collaboration with Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan (BVB) celebrated 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on October 2 near Gandhiji's Statue in Union Square Park, New York. 


2. The program began with a rendition of Gandhiji's favorite bhajan titled "Vaishnav Jan To Tene Re Kahiye" by the music academy of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. Accompanying them on the violin was Mrs. Vandana Sharma, former Regional Manager of Air India, Americas. 

3. On the occasion, Mr. Sandeep Chakravorty, Consul General of India, New York, spoke about the life and teachings of the Mahatma. He also spoke about Gandhi@150 celebrations and the recent inauguration of ‘Gandhi Peace Garden’ at the State University of New York Old Westbury Campus by Honorable Prime Minister of India. Dr. Naveen C. Mehta, Director, BVB, thanked PM Modi for the message on Mahatma Gandhi that he had delivered at the UN. 

4. A pioneer of the initiative that culminated in installation of Gandhiji’s statue at the park, Dr. Chandrasekhar, reminisced on the journey that was undertaken to make this idea a reality.
