OLATHE, KANSAS
Adam W. Purinton, 53, who shot dead of Srinivas Kuchibhotla, was sentenced Tuesday to three consecutive life prison sentences.
The sentences will run consecutively to another life sentence Purinton previously received for first-degree murder in Johnson County District Court, according to Wichita Eagle.
Purinton killed Kuchibhotla on Feb. 22, 2017, at Austins Bar & Grill in Olathe and wounded two others.
A prosecutor read a statement from Sunayana Dumala, the widow of Srinivas Kuchibhotla.
Tuesday was Dumala’s 34th birthday, and she said in her statement that it is ‘extremely painful for me to witness or face the shooter in person.
‘If you could have kept your anger inside and spoke to my husband softly, Srinu would have been more than happy to share his background and help you understand that not every brown skinned person is suspicious or evil, but kind, smart and contributing to America,” she said in Tuesday’s statement. “Instead you chose to rage and bully in anger and when you were stopped, you decided to take their lives.’
Kuchibhotla worked as an engineer for Garmin. He went to the bar with his friend Alok Madasani that fateful day.
Purinton began verbally harassing them, demanding to know where they were from and yelling at them to get out of my country, the report said
Other bar patrons stepped forward, told Purinton to leave and escorted him out of the business.
Soon Purinton returned with a handgun and fired at both friends. Ian Grillot, one of the patrons who had intervened earlier, ran after him and Purinton shot him also.
Purinton was arrested in Clinton, Missouri. He had told a bartender there that he was running from the police because he killed ‘two Iranians.’
In addition to murder charges, federal prosecutors added hate crime charges too.
Grillot is hailed as a hero by Indian community. Indians in Houston presented $100000 to him as a symbol of gratitude.
